Tena Tena was the first camp Robin Pope opened, it is a perfect mix of comfort and bush! There is a firm focus on walking safaris at Tena Tena, it has developed a fantastic reputation and boasts a strong record of return customers.

Thanks to the abundant wildlife in the area and the location of the camp, next to a mahogany grove, there are incredible photographic opportunities.

Why we love Tena Tena!

Loved the safari tents, that have such a rustic but classy and open feel to them. The open air but luxury bathroom has the most amazing views of the plains in front. This all complimented with tasty food, fantastic hosts, exceptional guiding and impressive and well-kept vehicles. Great wildlife sightings too.

History

Robin Pope’s first camp seems to hold a special place in the teams’ hearts as well as the guests. Set among a stunning rich grove of mahogany trees – for photography, there is nothing like ‘the golden hour’ between the trees – away from other camps it is the perfect place to base yourself for valley adventures as Robin once did himself.

Solo travel

Travelling by yourself can seem daunting (not to mention expensive) however, Robin Pope Safaris is one of the few companies that do not charge a single supplement (hooray) and are great for a solo traveller. Having done this, myself many times I would recommend it.

The guides are great at hosting and providing entertaining dinner companions, which is mainly done communally so you can get to know the other guests in camp. They manage to make you feel special for being there by yourself rather than the 3rd wheel to other guests. So, forget waiting on someone else to join you, the time is now!

Walking

Like all the great founders in South Luangwa, Robin Pope is well known for its excellent walking guides. Having met them first hand, we know that the guides live up to their renowned reputation. From handling, big game sightings with safety and care, to showing us the smaller, often overlooked, species such as the reptiles, insects and birds.

A walking safari is usually quieter than a drive, nevertheless, it is just as interesting. You get to see a great variety of the Valley’s inhabitants.

  • Bush camp extraordinaire

    A little more basic but simply wonderful tents with outside bathrooms looking out at the South Luangwa River-plenty of sounds of hippos and the roaring of lions. What an amazing place.

    Loved the dinner area and had delightful meals with all campers. Enjoyed breakfasts looking out at the river. Had an amazing safari walk- and got upfront and personal with two leopard cubs and a hippo.

    Everything was perfect, and accommodations kept you plenty warm- even in their winter. Lots of blanket and could zip up tent windows. Food was really good, and sundowners beautiful! What memories!

    The accommodations, the staff, the food AND the experience was beyond compare! We saw all of the animals UP close and with a guide that was comparable to having your own naturalist!. We loved the solitude of this camp.

    Wow, our 4 nights here were amazing.
    Our fabulous hostess was Jenny who looked after everyone very well.
    We had Chris, the best guide we’ve ever had in 12 years of African travel.
    The cottage was really comfortable, the food stunning, and all the staff super friendly and caring.
    Excellent game viewing, we’d go back in a heart beat!

  • Lovely setting

    Tena Tena was the second camp we visited, a transfer by canoe across the Luangwa River from Mwamba camp. The camp and tents were beautiful, ably managed by Florence as the relief manager supporting Bertram. It was bigger and felt a bit more ‘corporate’ than the previous camp we visited but this was offset by there being a great group of guests at the camp. We had three different guides during our stay with John being the best in our opinion – his eyesight was good even by guide standards and he did a great job tracking the wild dogs on our last day, resulting In us having 15 minutes with them before anyone else arrived. And, one morning earlier in the trip (also with John), we had one of those fantastic hours with a fleeting glance of wild dogs, a day time leopard hunt narrowly missing Puku (almost cheetah like, with the leopard sprinting across the ground rather than leaping from a tree) and then finding a pair of mating lions.
