Shinde & Shinde Enclave

On a private concession island in the northern Okavango Delta, you will find Shinde nestled amongst the palms. A classic and intimate camp, it is located on the edge of the Shinde Lagoon which is abundant with animals and fabulous birdlife. The newly refurbished camp’s unique main area is set under the shade of ebony and mangosteen trees and is made up of a stunning multi-tiered dining room and lounge. Shinde also boasts its very own exclusive ‘camp within the camp’ – Shinde Enclave. It offers just 3 exclusive safari tents to a group of friends or family, with a private dining and lounge area, it is the perfect retreat after a day’s activities. This intimate hideaway also offers guests the services of a private chef, waiter and housekeeper as well as their own professional guide and game drive vehicle.

Please note: Shinde will be closed March 2020 for rebuild.

Why we love Shinde!

Flying from Kanana (Ker & Downey Botswana camp in Okavango) straight into Shinde (also a Ker & Downey Botswana camp) made the swapping camps so easy and with a scenic flight over the Okavango too. Ker & Downey Botswana have their own private concession in both locations which meant very few other vehicles/boats, and only Ker & Downey Botswana vehicles/boats. Shinde is a lovely camp, overlooking the water and incredibly scenic. There are good cheetah populations in the area but we failed to find them, we did however have great lion and hyena sightings, both with cubs. Great guides, tasty food, friendly staff and fantastic wildlife sightings.

Lodge Key Features

Location

The Okavango Delta is the only inland delta of its kind and a unique oasis of life in the centre of the arid Kalahari Desert in Botswana. On a private concession in the Okavango Delta, this island-based camp offers spectacular views across the Shinde Lagoon and the swathes of papyrus reeds, and its location means a variety of exciting activities are on your doorstep.

Range of activities

Both properties offer land and water activities year-round; the different activities allow you to cover all the bases and see a variety of animals, birds, plants and reptiles in their individual habitats. Whether you’re on a game drive, a walking safari, on the motorboat, fishing or on the traditional Mokoro, there is always something to entertain you at Shinde so try to give each one a go to make the most of your Okavango experience.

Intimate camp

With only 8 tents (max 16 guests) at Shinde, and 3 tents (max 6 guests), it means that, along with the attentive staff, your needs are well catered for. Take some time out of your day to enjoy the peace and quiet the African wilderness offers and take a cooling dip in the pool after your morning activity.

Client Reviews

  • Brilliant safari experience

Three nights at Shinde provided the perfect start to our visit to Botswana and Zimbabwe. Transfer from Johannesburg via light plane from Mahon was straightforward and we were soon on our first afternoon game drive. Our guide Sanali is a real expert at tracking animals and explaining how they live and their habitat. We saw lions, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, various antelopes, zebras and so many birds.

  • Africa at its best

We went with 2 of our grand children to the “young explorers” experience at Ker and Downey: it is a 6 places camp but we had it for our own, with 2 guides, cook, laundry etc … the safaris ( also on foot) are just incredible, elephants and hippos between the tents…we had a family tent for four and it was perfect
Special thanks to manager Priscilla and guide Opey

  • Shinde was simply amazing!

We took a family trip to Africa for Safari and had the pleasure of staying a Shinde Camp. It was the most amazing trip of our lives. The camp is beautiful. The tent “hotel rooms” are truly luxurious. The food was fantastic. But all that pales in comparison to the quality of the guides and the staff who were engaging, knowledgeable and warm.
