Sitting on top of large granite and amongst boulders, Big Cave Lodge offers some spectacular views over the Matobo Hills National Park. The lodge itself is somewhat simple, and the A-frame chalets are basic but comfortable. The main area has a natural rock pool, complete with a sundeck so it’s a perfect area to head to and relax after an activity. During the evenings you can enjoy a drink around the campfire before sitting down to dinner. A relaxed atmosphere and a simpler stay to other lodges in the area but a lovely choice if you enjoy a more basic experience.
A more budget sensitive option, where the accommodation is basic but it does have incredible views, great architecture with the public areas built into the granite rocks, fantastic food and a great team.

Relax and unwind by the natural rock pool after a morning activity or prior to having an afternoon siesta. The sundeck offers sun lounges to relax in and the views from here are absolutely break-taking. The surroundings are pretty spectacular from here too; gorgeous views over the hills and if you get the opportunity to enjoy some down time when staying here, head to the bar and enjoy a sundowner from this quaint little spot.
All through Matobo National Park there are a number of rock paintings and some of them lie on Big Cave’s property. If you are looking for a cultural activity then arrange with the lodge for one of the guides to take you out on a walking expedition to visit the ‘Khoisan’ sites; we advise to head over on foot to enjoy a more intimate experience of the area. The rocks and caves are adorned with beautiful traditional paintings, it’s a different experience on offer and one to enjoy if you get the opportunity.
There is always a lot to enjoy when you are out in the bush, from walks and game drives, to hiking and rhino tracking. Here at Big Cave they offer something that not many places do, mountain biking. Although it may be a little tougher with the terrain around, if you are a keen cyclist or enjoy a challenge this is a great way to enjoy the wildlife from a different perspective. Guests can ride through the park or the property, with a 5km and 15km route through the hills.
