Luangwa River Camp

Based just outside the park but entered by boat. This hidden piece of paradise is perfect for those who want more of a lodge than a tent. Although Luangwa River Camp is in the busy area of the Mfuwe sector, this lodge is hidden away, a little upstream, and is a gem of secluded paradise that only the animals seem aware of. Watch as the elephants make their journey across the river and back in the morning and evening as you enter and exit the park by boat.

Why we love Luangwa River Camp!

One of my favourites! The rooms are comfortable and luxurious and the lodge is the same from excellent meals to top-level guiding, they have found the perfect balance of a luxury lodge without going over the top. Entering the park by boat (only available certain times of the year) and coming back across the water under the moonlight is an extraordinary experience – I loved it.

Lodge Key Features

Walls

We love a bush camp and a tent, but not everyone does. Especially those who are visiting for the first time. The rooms here are incredibly spacious and have 4 brick walls! The en-suite bathrooms all have either freestanding baths with a view or a decadent sunken bath (also with floor level views). The rooms are huge yet cosy and feel like a safe haven as the wildlife wanders round you at night.

Boat crossing

Although in the busy Mfuwe area, the lodge is slightly upstream of the park entrance and can be reached by boat (or driving across the riverbed when water levels are low). Crossing the river into the park as the sun rises whilst watching the elephants return after a night of pinching mangoes from the nearby village is extremely special. Traversing at night under the moonlight is also very special, the water reflects the twinkling stars. It is such a gorgeous and relaxing way to get to the lodge.

Guides

The guides here are fantastic! It goes without saying that Robin Pope has a high standard of guides; often they have been with the company for over 10 years. Subsequently, sightings are well thought out not only for spotting hard to see animals but for good positioning of the vehicle for photos and lighting.

The guides here know the valley like the back of their hand and can effectively show off their home ground and keep you entertained on drinks stops.

Client Reviews

  • Unforgettable experience!

My husband and I stayed for 4 nights last week and had the most incredible stay at this camp. We have stayed in various camps in Africa over several years but this place surpassed them all.
The game drives, rooms, staff and location were second to none and the food was nothing short of exquisite!
Thanks to Daudi, Joe, Boniface and everyone else who made us so welcome and I’d like to think we will return again one day!
If your goal is to see animals at every turn then come to this beautiful part of the world and stay with these lovely guys!

  • A piece of heaven on the river banks

The camp is located in a magic spot on the banks of river Luangwa. The staff is friendly and supportive, the overall atmosphere is very relaxed and you feel at home very soon. Safaris are great as there is an abundance of wildlife in the park and the guides are very knowledgeable.

  • An amazing privilege to visit…

ust wanted to say a massive thank you to Joe, Sheddie, Melvyn, Daudi and all the crew at River Camp for making this bit of our honeymoon so special.

From a safari perspective South Luangwa is packed with wildlife and we saw something new on each trip out. Although only there for 2.5 days we saw everything we could practically hope for – including leopards hunting and mating.

Our room was great – both private and secure, and the food was amazing.

  • Perfect way to start my first safari experience!

I couldn’t fault Luangwa River Camp and Robin Pope Safaris. I was only at the camp for 2 nights but thought everything was perfect. The staff including Camp manager, guides and host were all charming and the game drives with the incredible guides were wonderful. I enjoyed the food and the accomodation was above my expectations.
