Nkonzi Camp is for those who want a bit of adventure, who urge to explore the park as the founders once did all those years ago! Run by Gavin Opie, a well-renowned guide, it is a chance to see some of the parks unique flora and fauna. With an emphasis on the wildlife, this is the time to really delve into nature and learn all about the valley.
The intimate camp is simple yet comfortable with communal dinners around the fire, under the starlight, it is the perfect place to swap stories and get a good rest after tracking the animals through the day. Gavin hosts perfectly from telling stories around the campfire to teaching you how to track leopards. It is perfect for those who really want to experience the bush as it should be.

Nkonzi makes sure you are well taken care of; from the cup of well needed coffee in the morning to the welcoming nature of the hosts. Enjoy privately guided game drives and walks with Gavin himself or one of the well-trained guides.
Hidden in a secluded area of the park you are unlikely to come across any other guests, which allows you to see the smaller creatures in the Luangwa as well as the animals it’s famous for! And the best part is you will share that experience with a maximum of 7 other guests!
Nkonzi is remote and unspoiled yet accessible; the South Luangwa main gate is a 45-minute drive from camp and Mfuwe Airport is approximately 1.5 hours from camp.
The wilderness experience at Nkonzi is incredible. Being so deep inside the national park you are surrounded by wildlife, including visitors to the sand bed. The camp is in the animal rich Nsefu sector. This puts you in a fantastic position to set off on a walking safari, beginning and ending at the camp.
Game drives can head north, east, south or west into untouched wildlife habitats. Stargazing is also amazing from Nkonzi camp, with zero light pollution and panoramic views of the Milky Way.
Top tip: to see the valley lit up at night, time your stay with a full moon.
Gavin has lived in Zambia for over twenty years and leads safari activities himself as well as hosting guests, he knows the South Luangwa like the back of his hand and is an incredibly entertaining host. Gavin can educate you on the wild animals of Luangwa, including 4 of the big 5 (rhino aren’t found in South Luangwa), he is also excellent at finding the smaller species, from showing you how to identify birds and trees to tracking. If you have ever wondered what it takes to be a great guide look no further than Gavin!
