There is nothing quite like a bush adventure. On our Classic Adventure tour, you get the chance to stay deep in the bush at Tafika Camp and Chikoko Trails, here you can enjoy the serenity of the bush and sight an abundance of diverse game populations.
You will spend two nights at Tafika before walking to Chikoko which is only accessible by foot. Here you will be immersed into the idyll of remote Africa.
Following your time in the bush you will fly to Malawi, where you will spend three nights on a remote island on Lake Malawi. Mumbo island will be home for the final days of your Classic Adventure tour.
Located on a tight bend in the Luangwa River, and surrounded on three sides by the National Park, Tafika’s site was hand-picked by the Coppingers. The camp itself lies nestled in the shade of giant leadwood trees and is a hub of activity for the big game: elephant, hippos, lion, and large herds of buffalo are frequently encountered in and around camp.
Accommodation at Tafika consists of six very spacious and airy rooms. The ceiling, walls and doors are cleverly constructed of reeds and grasses, with no man-made materials whatsoever; and the cool floors are composed of brick and slate.
Here, exceptional game viewing is combined with exciting activities including daily day and night drives, mountain bike safaris, walking safaris and visits to the local Mkasanga Village.
Chikoko Trails incorporates two small and exclusive bush camps, Chikoko Tree Camp and Crocodile River Camp, from which unparalleled walking safaris are offered, strolling from camp to camp.
Each intimate camp offers accommodation for a maximum of six guests in refreshingly simple, grass-walled chalets with en-suite flush toilets and showers. Hot water is provided upon request. Here guests – accompanied by an experienced guide, an armed National Park scout and a tea bearer – tread through the African bush alongside the wildlife. It is an experience that is liberating and unforgettable.
Morning walks are four hours in duration starting early to avoid the heat of the day, stopping frequently for the guide to share the secrets of the bush. Midway, the accompanying tea-bearer conjures up a welcome cup of fresh tea or coffee with a light snack.
One more night at Tafika where you can sit on a canvas deckchair on the lawn, or gently sway above it on a hammock, you can often see antelope, elephant and other large mammals come to the waters to drink. It is a magical spot.
Mumbo Island is a pristine and deserted tropical island floating on the expansive waters of the Lake Malawi National Park. With a maze of massive underwater boulders, innumerable species of colourful cichlid fish and calm, clear water, the National Park offers what many consider the best freshwater snorkeling and SCUBA diving in the world.
Mumbo Island is only 1km in diameter and has never been populated so it remains in a pristine, natural state. Kayak Africa run Mumbo as an entirely off grid, green camp so that it remains as unspoilt and perfect as it has been forever.
End of the tour… We will transfer you to Lilongwe Airport for your onward journey.
