Old Mondoro

A smaller camp with everything you want to get out of a safari experience, Old Mondoro is the sister camp of Chiawa Camp. Whilst not as luxurious it is where comfort meets authenticity, offering a genuine and intimate Safari to its guests. Concentrating on the wildlife that surrounds the area the camp boasts extraordinary guides to maximise your experience.

Why we love Old Mondoro!

I loved the wild feel of this camp. From the outdoor bath I doubled as a plunge pool, I watched the numerous elephants, buffalo, antelope and baboons who surrounded my room wading through the lagoon. I also had one of the most incredible game drives I have ever been on I can safely say the wildlife here is exceptional.

Wild, luxurious and intimate, Old Mondoro is outstanding. With only 4 chalets and a maximum of 8 guests at a time this is the place to go for a quieter safari experience. You are guaranteed to see The Great African Elephant all around you when staying here and daily wonder through the camp. A favourite is the open chalets and outdoor shower; all overlooking the gorgeous views of the Lower Zambezi.

Lodge Key Features

Natural Rooms

The Rooms are rustic and open, constructed with natural materials. It is one of the most beautiful and remote sites on the Lower Zambezi and along the lagoon inland, you can watch the inhabitants grazing along the banks throughout the day from your very own sun deck. With the lagoon being a favourite for the big bull elephants, it’s hard to take a midday siesta as there is so much action in the area!

Old Mondoro offers all the comforts whilst still fitting in so perfectly with its natural surroundings. The outdoor bath and shower are open, and look right out onto the Zambezi River allowing for some magical views and star gazing. During the evenings the blinds in the rooms are rolled down and you can hear the nightlife surrounding you, it is truly an extraordinary and fulfilling experience.

Wonderful staff

The team at Old Mondoro is small but each member is passionate about what they do and where they work. They bring a very personable experience to guests and you become captivated into their world during the time you spend here. The guides are of an extremely high quality and the management couple are well versed safari lovers who make excellent hosts during meal times answering all your bush questions and entertaining you round the campfire.

River Safaris

The Lower Zambezi has so much to offer at the camps ensuring they take your experience to the next level. Having the Zambezi River on their doorstep Old Mondoro (and Chiawa) is one of the few camps that are allowed to take guests on river safaris within the park. There are a number of channels to explore and it’s great to have the opportunity to see what the park has to offer via boat – mainly elephant, hippo and buffalo but if you are an avid bird watcher this is a great way to observe the bird life along the river and its banks. With the expert guides, you will learn so much about the African bush and the wildlife around.

Client Reviews

  • First class camp in every way

Excellent camp. Good hostess and manager and wonderful knowledgable guides. Lots of choices of activity – game drives, walking, river boat trips, canoing, fishing. Lovely being near such a wide full river with plenty of wild life. Saw lots of lions, elephants, birds. Good food and choices. Good accommodation with open fronts that could be closed.

  • The absolute top!

This bush camp, with only four chalets, is my absolute favourite. Chalet 1 and 2 are overlooking the river. Chalet 3 and 4 overlooking the lagoon, were animals come to drink and bathe. I stayed in chalet 3 (the best!) and when I arrived elephants were blocking my door! The guides are exstremely good and they create a warm and relaxed atmosphere, that makes the gamedrives a real pleasure.

  • A very special place

This is a unique and special place.
We had stayed 4 nights up river at Chiawa, and arrived by boat from there to a very warm welcome from Michelle the camp manager and several other members of staff.
There is a central area for relaxing, eating and leaving for either game drives or river trips. The rooms are 4 individual chalets placed well apart from one another facing the river or a creek and very well equipped. There is an inside flushing toilet and washhand basin. Outside is a shower and bath, so when having a shower and elephants are meandering past, is an experience like no other!
