Thornicroft Lodge
Based on the banks of the Luangwa in the wildlife rich Mfuwe sector this lodge is the perfect place for those on a tighter budget to experience the valley of the leopards! The rooms all look out onto the river providing excellent hippo and croc viewing through the day and for a chance to see the elephants cross in and out of the park which they usually do at sunrise and sunset!
Why we love Thornicroft Lodge!

The rooms
Each of the rooms is large fresh and airy with a beautiful African themed décor. From murals of the famous Thornicroft giraffe to the bright African prints from the local tribal textile store you will instantly feel immersed in the local culture. With mosquito nets and en-suite bathrooms the rooms are the perfect place to rest after a day’s exciting activities in the park, gently nodding off to the sounds of the nocturnal animals as they start to wake up!
The location
Located on the park edge it is a hotspot of activity. Do not be fooled the park boundary is for us the animals regularly cross it! The elephants regularly swim across the river at sunrise and set (to try and raid the village crops and lodge flowerbeds!!) as well as regular sightings of plains game, baboons, crocs, hippos and of course the famous giraffes the lodge was named after!
Lodge
The lodge is simple yet comfortable with lots of amenities to make your stay enjoyable. From the quirky Zambian shaped pool you can relax in during the heat of the day to the fun dining room with Braai area where you can have some delicious local and international food. The lounges all have river views for 24hour bush TV! And of course a nightly fire pit where you can share stories from the day and watch as the stars start to twinkle at night.
Client Reviews
- Great camp on the banks of Luangwa RiverWe have just spent a great weekend at Thornicroft Lodge – we were a group of 14 – three families travelling together including seven children aged from 10 to 15. Nadja and Dylan managed our booking and were great to deal with and very welcoming. We stayed on the full board basis excluding safaris, which we organised ourselves. Safaris can be booked through Thornicroft.jubalee2017
- A wonderful experience of safari in South Luangwa National ParkMy son and I enjoyed our 4 nights here with a total of 8 game drive taken. The whole team of staff led by Nadia and Dylan was very friendly and helpful. The chef here, like a magician, who made all the foods delicious. Boyd, our guide was extremely knowledgeable about the park and did an excellent job on the game drive.HowardKKW
- Wonderful ChoiceThe lodge is overlooking the waters of the Luangwa river, for this reason offering a truly unique spectacle of nature.
You can come across an elephant or a hippo walking in the garden, but you dont need to watch out because guards are there for you…Lucio P
