Musekese Camp

Musekese Camp is one of those rare camps you can’t help but fall in love with. From the conservational ethos behind the making of the camp (to help reduce poaching in the area) to the fact that’s its owner built and run, you can find an ever enthusiastic Phil and Tyrone working tirelessly to build camp, make the area a safe haven for the surrounding wildlife, guide and host guests! With just 4 chalets in the middle of the Kafue wilderness, it is simple and rustic yet new and unique!

Why we love Musekese!

The enthusiasm from the owners and guides Phil and Tyrone is infectious from the love and passion for the bush to their knowledge of conservation. Throw in that they are great hosts and suddenly Musukese becomes one of the most fun lodges to stay in.

Lodge Key Features

Conservation/anti poaching

Despite the thriving wildlife, Kafue has had a long history of problems with poaching. From the ongoing problem with the bushmeat trade as well as increasing its anti-poaching efforts, African Parks is due to step in this year. In an effort to help decrease poaching Phil and Tyrone set up camp in a high-risk area (which has significantly reduced the poaching) they have also teamed up with the Lion Recovery Fund who brought the lions back to Liwonde NP in Malawi) to set up a second site for anti-poaching as well as building their anti-poaching team.

Staying here means you get to directly contribute to their incredible projects and help save the animals of Kafue! To date, they have some impressive stats including apprehending 31 suspects and recovering 21 shotguns.

Walking/rare sightings

The location is fantastic, having habituated the wildlife themselves in an area that once had little game due to poaching the conservation work they have done here is apparent. From the incredible floodplain to the tree house hide the endless areas that have previously been untouched are teeming with wildlife. Here you can spot the usual big 4 regularly but also some of the more unusual smaller animals like serval or the incredible bird species. You can even spot these animals around camp from the comfort of your large tent.

Guides/owners

Phil and Tyrone are born and bred guides, both have family in the industry and grew up in the bush which is apparent from their incredible knowledge and guiding skills. Both of them feel passionately not only about wildlife but about the area too. It is rare to have camp owners onsite and so it is great to have these guys at camp, talking about their journey, encouraging people to come to Kafue and making sure camp runs smoothly.

The lodge has everything you’d wish for; flood plain views, huge beds, top quality mosquito nets, a treehouse hide and much more, all of which takes this camp to the next level.

  • Lovely return visit

Our return visit to Musekese and Ntemwe-Busanga was a total pleasure.
Activity on the dambo changes- a family of elephants muckled into gardenias, herd of puku, grey-crowned cranes and wattled cranes. The sound of guttural toads at night.
On the plains, great views of cavorting red lechwe, roans, a herd of blue wildebeest with newly arrived calves and handsome sable stallions. The sight of a rosy throated longclaw standing in purple pan weed. Long lingering view of a serval on a night drive.

  • More Wildlife, Less People!

Simply amazing. If you want to tick off the big five in the company of a dozen landcruisers, then this is not for you.
Simple but sumptuous. The emphasis here is on varied and exciting wildlife in the company of top-quality guides. Here, Phil and Tyrone not only share the spotting skills of the old hands but also have an astonishing depth of knowledge of the environment in which they live. Add to this their commitment to conservation and protection and you have the ideal company for any wildlife enthusiast.
